PRESENTATION: “A Rare Find in the Copper Mountains” by Gina Clingerman, BLM Archaeologist
In 2015, Abandoned Mine Land Archaeologist Gina Clingerman found a fur trade era spear point in the Copper Mountains in central Wyoming. The rare artifact featured a maker's mark that could be traced back to the cutlery industry in Sheffield, England. This presentation pieces together the history of the 'Maltese Cross L' maker's mark, a brief history of the Fur Trade Era in North America and Wyoming, and how this unlikely artifact may have made its way into the Copper Mountains. Gina Clingerman: Gina Clingerman attended the University of Wyoming obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in English and Anthropology. She has worked as a professional archaeologist for the last 16 years. In 2010 she moved to Lander, WY to work as the Abandoned Mine Lands archaeologist for BLM Wyoming.
